Bank Account IBAN Verification
On this page, you will learn how to verify that a bank account exists and belongs to the specified person.
The Bank Account IBAN Verification service enables you to verify if a person’s IBAN belongs to an existing account owned by that person.
The verification process is very straightforward and consists of the following steps:
- Send the IBAN OR Send a Bank Account Details Document along with the expected holder's details.
- Receive the verification results once the verification is done. You can obtain the response via a webhook or by calling a dedicated endpoint.
The verification relies on the VOP (Verification of Payee) scheme.VOP (Verification of Payee) is a European scheme that allows to confirm whether an account holder's name reasonably matches a given IBAN. VOP currently covers individuals only. We are actively working on extending it to legal persons, expected in Q3.
The service covers banks across 20 European countries, including traditional banks and part of the neobanks.
As a consequence, an IBAN can only be verified when the bank holding it is registered in the VOP scheme and falls within our coverage. Some neobanks and payment institutions are not yet connected to the scheme, or only partially.
🔁 Replacing SEPAmail
VOP replaces the former SEPAmail solution, which was limited to France and traditional banks.
